How to Increase the Life of Your Laptop Battery
Extending the Life of Your Battery
Damaging your laptop battery is the easiest way to kill it. The 2 most common ways to damage it is by overloading the battery and overheating it. Here’s how to avoid both.
When you use your lap as a table for your laptop, use a cooling pad to avoid overheating.
Don’t use a pillow or other soft surface to prop up your computer. Another easy way for overheating.
Keep your desk area clean. Dust is everywhere and it easily accumulates on your computer which will eventually clog your vents and fan. It’s harder to clean your laptop once the dust gets inside so dusting and cleaning it often will avoid this. A can of compressed air will help clean out the dust already there.
Avoid leaving your computer where the temperature exceeds 85 degrees Fahrenheit such as inside your car.
If you plug into an electrical outlet when using your computer, take out your laptop’s battery. Avoid getting the battery contacts dirty. Rubbing alcohol will clean it if need be.
If your laptop uses a lithium ion battery, you don’t have to let the battery get low and recharge constantly like the older nickel-metal hydride batteries. It’s really better to only partially discharge the lithium ion battery before you recharge it. Fully discharge the battery only after every 30 or so discharges.
A battery overload happens when your AC adapter’s wattage is larger than noted on your laptop and battery or your laptop’s circuitry frequently overcharges it. Make sure your AC adapter is what’s required for your laptop. If you’re using an adapter that didn’t come with the laptop, make sure the specifications are correct. No need to do this if you’re using the adapter that came with the computer. The worst that can happen is an overload damaging your computer’s motherboard.
If you follow these guidelines, you’ll not only increase the life of your battery but also the life of your computer.
