How Encrypted Email Systems Work

July 9, 2009 by Amy Nutt · Comments

email-encryptionTechnology has become so intertwined in our lives one will be hard-pressed to wonder what our lives would be like without it. One of the best inventions the world has ever seen, undoubtedly, is the internet. The internet is one that has shaped the way that we look at the world, providing a venue for people to connect with everyone all over the globe, as well as learn anything that they could possible want to learn. One of the best services to be brought about with the conception of the internet is the email system, sending messages nearly at a moment’s notice.

For those of you sending sensitive information, there may be a need for special measures to be implemented to make sure that the message doesn’t fall into the wrong hands. This is called the encrypted email solution, which is usually a password or phrase encryption that only the recipient will know. This generally works out pretty well, and protects snooping individuals from getting their hands on one’s precious data. Luckily for the consumer, there are many different services available that will do most of the work for a person, so they don’t have to necessarily be a encryption expert and write up the algorithm themselves.

For those that have the necessary know-how, they will use something similar to something called public key encryption, which does require a certain amount of skill if they want to write the algorithm themselves. This works on the system of two different keys, a public and private key. They work with polar functions, one being the method in which the information is encrypted (public) and the other would decrypt the data (private.) This would fall into the responsibility of the recipient to make sure that this is done correctly and the data is, in fact, private.

GPG Under the GNU General Public license, the GPG software is something that is free to download for encryption purposes. It is a command line tool that works across platforms, although it is not exactly the easiest things to use for those who are not exactly technologically inclined. It involves a complex algorithm for most, and it must be performed exactly for the process to work. So, it would be advisable to stick with the more popular services, as they tend to be just as reliable as performing such a feat themselves.

For those sending personal data, it is understandable that they would like to make sure that it doesn’t get intercepted and read, as it is sensitive information. There are many different sources that one can find that are willing to do this for anyone who requires it done, and generally they are reliable and are cost-effective in their offerings to the consumer. With a little research, one will easily find many of the companies offering such a service. And after sufficient findings in comparing the rates of these companies, everyone with encryption needs will find that they are quite easy to come by.

Where You Can Buy Inexpensive PC Software

February 27, 2009 by Amy Nutt · Comments

PC software can be expensive, which is why it’s important to find the best deals possible. Being that we can’t exactly operate a computer without software or do the things that we enjoy with computers, it’s a must that we have software. It doesn’t matter if you’re playing a computer game, keeping track of business expenses, or protecting your computer from viruses. Some of these programs are really expensive.

But the good news is that you don’t have to sell a kidney or a limb in order to purchase the PC software you need. There are places online and even offline that will allow you to purchase PC software at a great price.

Where can you buy?

First of all, you really need to look on the Internet. Here are some of the places you can look to find the software that you need:

- Online discount retailers – These are retailers that buy programs in bulk so that they can sell them much cheaper. A company is always able to sell cheaper if they can buy more.

- Auction websites – There are auction websites that allow you to buy software programs both new and used. Used programs are going to cost a lot less than new ones. This is something you might want to think about because you never know when you might get unusable software. What’s great though is you’re still able to find cheap new programs on these sites.

Software stores – This one is a given, but there are software stores that will sell their PC software cheap.

You can do a simple Internet search in a search engine and find places that sell cheap PC software. Just make sure you look up their reputations so that you know you’re doing business with a reputable company. Anyone can create a website and sell software so be very careful.

In the offline environment, there are plenty of places you can buy. You can go to your local department store but you may find that the prices are still rather high. They may be cheaper than if you go to the computer store, but it’s still possible for you to get them for less. Here are some places to check:

- Discount software stores. They may, however, have used software. See if they test their programs when they get them in so that you know whether or not you are buying something that works.

- Flea Market. The flea market doesn’t always mean that what you’re getting is not good. There are some vendors that set up at flea markets and sell software in packages that have never been opened. They may also sell used programs. Use your own discretion.

- Yard sales. Yard sales are also great places to check out because they’re individuals who many never open their PC software and they sell them.

- Schools . Check with schools because schools and colleges get a great discount which is then passed on to you as a student. Many times when you are a student, you may be able to get an expensive program for a few dollars anyway so that you can do your homework at home on your own PC.

Look everywhere!

So look everywhere. You might be surprised at what places you may be able to find cheap PC software. Why pay $300 for a program when you can get it for half of that or for a quarter of the cost? There is no need for that. You can buy your own licensed copy, which is another reason why you need to be leery of used programs. Used games are okay, but with anything requiring a license, make sure you get a new program and make sure you explore the deals before making your final move.

The Benefits of Updating Your Security Software

January 9, 2009 by Amy Nutt · Comments

Software programs are the lifeblood of our computers, without up to date software programs we wouldn’t be able to do all of the things that we need to do on our computers.

Some software updates may not be quite as necessary as others, but regular updates to some software are crucial to provide necessary security against the latest internet threats.

What Types of Updates Do I Need?

If you spend time on the internet, send and receive e-mails or send and receive instant messages’ then internet security software is a necessity.  Internet security software is what will protect you against viruses, spy-ware, ad-ware, mal-ware and all other sorts of threats present to those who spend time on the internet.  New viruses and other forms of internet threats are generated every single day. In order for you to stay safe from these threats, you need the best and most up to date security software you can get.

Some internet security software companies, like the producers of Norton Internet Security 2009, are constantly generating protection from the latest forms of internet threats and they make these updates available for their customers as soon as they are ready.  Subscribers to Norton Internet Security 2009 can receive ‘pulse’ updates that are available with up to the minute protection to ensure that you’re protected from every type of threat as soon as it’s discovered.

Continuously updating your computer security software is an absolute necessity if you want your computer to be protected and run as fast and efficient as it’s capable.

What Types of Updates are Optional?

Some software companies tend to go a little bit overboard with updates, releasing a “brand new” version of a program when you’ve barely even had a chance to get used to the previous version of the same program. These are the updates that you have to make a decision as to whether of not you want or need it enough to download the update.

You sometimes need to be wary of potential bugs that may be introduced with updates. Manufacturers all to often rush the release of an update and let it hit the market before all of the bugs and incompatibilities are worked out.  It’s not always necessary for a software package to be updated every few weeks or months.

For software packages or programs that you’ve installed on your computer that don’t have to do with your PC’s security, you have the freedom to be able to choose when and if you want install an update without the fear of an imminent threat making the decision for you.  You can take the time to take into account how much you like the current version of the software and how well it runs on your system.  You can compare the features listed in the update to the features of the version that you are currently running. If the features on the version you have are more appealing to you, or if the new version has no new features that you want or need, then you don’t have to update it.

Ultimately, any update that becomes available on any type of software is optional, but you can keep your computer running at an optimal level by continuously updating you computer software as the updates become available.  Any updates that fix existing problems with software that you run are beneficial to download, as is any update that will increase the speed of the programs you are running, but the biggest benefit of updates comes with security software.

Continuously updating your security software guarantees that you will be safe from the latest threats that may invade and cause problems with your PC. It will give you the piece of mind to surf the internet freely because you are protected.

Data Center Challenges That Companies Face Today

October 31, 2008 by Amy Nutt · Comments

Brief History of the Data Center

Data centers now occupy the space that once belonged to the super computers of the early computer era. In the early days of computing, dedicated rooms were required to keep the huge machines cool, safe, and free of dust and other contaminants. These dedicated rooms later became home to data centers.

In the 1990s, the complex systems employed by information technology departments were gathered together in these dedicated rooms. Client-server networking became standard for information technology departments, and the dedicated room was perfect for the hierarchical design of the data center.

Eventually, data centers outgrew these dedicated rooms. As the Internet age came into being, companies learned that having an Internet presence was an integral part of doing business. These new requirements of Internet data centers brought with them a host of challenges for many companies.

The Challenge of Physical Space

While the early data centers could fit in a single dedicated room, the advent of the Internet data center made it much harder to find space for all the necessary servers, cables, and other important equipment. Finding the space for all this equipment became a challenge for many companies.

Private data centers were created to solve this problem. Rather than find dedicated space for a large Internet data center on site, a company could outsource their data center needs and use the space for other activities.

The Expense of Operating a Data Center

Even for companies that can find the physical space to house a large Internet data center, the cost of operating a large data center can be prohibitive. Outfitting a large data center with the necessary technology is no small undertaking. Good servers are expensive, as is the rest of the necessary equipment.

In addition, staffing a data center isn’t affordable for many company. Internet data centers must be running 24 hours a day, seven days a week. This means that companies must pay their information technology employees to be on site and available during all times of the day. Staffing a data center during off hours can be very expensive.

Again, this is where private data centers have provided a solution. Rather than buying the equipment and hiring the staff for their own data centers, companies can use the services of a private data center instead. This has helped many companies significantly reduce the amount of money they spend on their data centers.

The Problem of Security and Reliability

Besides the challenges of physical space, equipment expense, and staffing, operating a data center also comes with a multitude of security and reliability challenges. A company is only as reliable as its data center, and if the data center goes down for any reason, a company usually has to suspend operations.

Reliability and security depend on having properly trained staff and good security practices in place. In addition, a good disaster recovery plan is necessary in make it easier for a company to come back from a major event.

Private data centers help many companies with this challenge by taking on the responsibility of storing the data securely. Finding a private data center can drastically reduce the stress associated with providing secure data storage and can make recovering from a disaster as quick and easy as possible.

What is SAS 70 Certified?

August 24, 2008 by Amy Nutt · Comments

SAS 70 stands for Statement on Auditing Standards No. 70. It is an auditing standard that was adopted by the American Institute of Certified Public Accountants and is widely recognized in the auditing of service organizations. An auditor performs an audit on a service organization and that audit is conducted in a way that is compliant with SAS 70. It is that standard statement that says a service organization has been through an extensive audit

This extensive audit measures is that the organization data centre has total control and has safeguards in place that does not compromise any data that they process for their customers. In other words, the job of the audit is to evaluate every aspect of the service organization that handles customer data or could result in a possible leak of customer data.

SAS 70 is necessary for the following reasons:

- It serves as a guide to service organizations when disclosing to their customers how it is they protect their information and how well they do it. The audit results are organized in a report that is easy to follow.

- It is not a checklist audit, but serves as a guide to independent auditors to form an opinion on how well the organization is utilizing their internal controls. There are certain standards that must be met during the audit.

- Provides a set of standards in which the auditor can perform a financial statement audit.

All of the information that is gathered is compiled into two types of reports. These reports are called Type I and Type II.

Type I report

A type I report takes the organizations description of their own controls at a certain point in time and describes those descriptions. The report includes the report by the independent auditor, which is simply the auditor’s opinion, and it includes the organization?s descriptions of their internal controls. There are parts of the report that are optional such as tests that are performed by the auditor and the auditor recording the results of those tests. Another optional area is the inclusion of any other information that the organization provides the auditor about its controls.

cry baby movie Type II

The type II report is similar to the type I report in a lot of ways. The main difference is that it is mandatory for the auditor to perform tests and record the results of those tests. This is optional with type I. All of the other areas of evaluation remain the same and the inclusion of additional data by the organization is still optional.

How the organization benefits

download igby goes down dvdrip

The organization benefits from SAS 70 because it is receiving an unbiased opinion from the outside regarding the security and the effectiveness of its financial and customer-related controls. In turn, the organization can then work on any areas of weakness, which means that the customers can feel more secure about who they are doing business with. This builds a trust with customers when they know that their financial and/or personal information with the organization are secure. It lets them know who they can turn to when they need what the service organization has to offer.

Also, a service organization that has regular audits performed is an organization that has a long business life ahead of it. As stated before, customers will turn to a secure organization to do business. That means the organization is ensuring itself a long life as long as regular audits are performed to ensure the security of their internal controls. Keeping up with their controls can also save them money from having to eventually bring their controls up-to-date.

Data Centre Failure

August 14, 2008 by Amy Nutt · Comments

There are many reasons in which a data centre can fail. It can be quite frustrating, so it is important to know what those reasons are so that you can prevent them or know what to do when they happen. Because a lot of data centers exist on a site separate from the computers that are retrieving data from them, it is important that data centers continue running. When they go down, all computers pulling from them from various places around a single country or even the world are not going to be able to retrieve any information. Such is true for customer service jobs in which customer information must be retrieved from a secure data centre that resides elsewhere. If that data center is not operating, money is lost because employees are unable to do their jobs and customers become very unhappy that their situation cannot be resolved.

Reasons why data centres fail

Some of the reasons why data centers fail can be prevented and then there are some ways in which they cannot. However, it is important to do what is necessary to ensure as few outages as possible.

download twister dvd Here are some reasons for failure:

- The “wear-in” phase ? This is the point in time in which the data center has just become operational. It is typical that certain things may fail as they are trying to become fully operational. It is like a toddler learning how to walk. The data center has to walk too, so it is good to let it run with minimal use and gradually build until it has gotten its legs. This involves comprehensive testing as the system usage increases in order to fix problems before they become a problem.

- The “wear-out” phase ? This is when the data center is reaching the end of its life. Regular maintenance and care will slow this process, but major parts will eventually wear out. It is ideal to consistently monitor the system in order to predict failure and avoid catastrophe.

download wallace gromit in the curse of the were rabbit divx

– Power failure ? Power failure is devastating to anything that relies on it for operation. It is especially devastating to a data center. That is why it is important to have a generator or two ready to take over in case the power goes.

- Generator failure ? Generators need care too and they need to be tested. Power goes out and generators take over in order to keep the data center running. Generators have been known to go out and cause data center failure.

- Metal whiskers ? If the data center hardware is sitting on a metallic surface, then that metallic surface could grow zinc whiskers. These have been known to cause short circuits, especially in data centres. There are also tin whiskers that grow out from tin and they too cause shorts. Silver whiskers that grow on silver electrical contacts and gold whiskers that develop on gold plated services are also known to cause short outs. Large fans that suck the whiskers in can be used and the elements that produce them can be replaced.

Prevention is key

Prevention is the key to keeping your data center up and running. If any of these elements occur, it is good to stay calm and do what needs to be done to keep the problem from occurring again. If you have experienced generator failure, you may wish to invest in a backup to your main generator. If you?re building a new data center, be sure to use flooring that does not produce any type of metal whiskers that can short out your hardware. By being vigilant, you can ensure that your data center uptime will be at or near 100%.
