internet-security-is-it-safeWhat is security exactly? Why is it important? Security is like reliability. Except when your talking about security you are talking about protection from other people; people that intend to do damage to you. It is a measurement of how much protection you have from danger, loss, or harm.

So what is Internet security? Internet security is just that, protection from people online that would do you harm. There are millions of people online everyday. And where there are people, you can be sure there are criminals.

Internet security has more than just criminals to worry about. There is the addition of malicious code. Malicious code comes in many different forms but can be categorized into three main groups. Each have their own purpose. Viruses infect your computer and either steal or damage your computer. Spyware tracks your moves online. Adware forces you to view unwanted advertisements.

What now? You know what internet security is. You know what threats are out there. So what to do about it? Here are three ways you can protect yourself from hackers, crackers, and malicious software online.

The first thing you need is a firewall. A firewall is your first line of defense online. It protects your personal information on your computer. It is even more important to have a firewall if you have a home wireless network.

Another great way to improve internet security is with antivirus software. This special type of software scans, detects, and quarantines files on your computer that become infected. Your antivirus software should auto update regularly to fight the evolution of viruses online.

And as if that wasn’t enough, we need to cover spyware. Spyware is used to get information about you. Your passwords, your browsing behavior, your private information. To tackle this annoying problem, install the latest antispyware on your PC. A good antispyware software suite will protect from things like Trojans, adware, and keyloggers.

These are the basics, but important basics, to keep you secure on the Internet. If you’d like more information about Internet security and what to do to keep yourself safe, read Aaron’s articles about Internet Security.
