Everywhere I look…. Computer Viruses
It seems these days that viruses are everywhere and infecting more people than normal. In the past month, I’ve seen more infections from viruses than I’ve seen in years.
The problem is even the best anti-virus software can’t always protect you. It’s best to be proactive, and know what to lookout for on your own. Here are some hints to help you avoid virus infection.
First off, be very, very careful with your emails. If you send me a file, and I wasn’t expecting that file, or didn’t ask for it. I won’t be opening it. You can easily send your friends or family a virus without even being aware it.
Secondly, you’ll have to take note of which websites you are visiting. By visiting non reputable websites, you have to be very careful. Some nefarious hackers have installed very innocent looking scripts on websites whose sole purpose is to infect your computer.
Third, use a web browser other than Microsoft Internet Explorer. I highly recommend Mozilla Firefox. It’s a great program that is very customizable and is a lot less likely to cause infection. Because more people use Internet Explorer, most hackers like to go after those users rather than the less popular Firefox.
Fourth, don’t download illegal software. Many so called “warez” sites are very aggressive in promoting virus infections. You have to be very careful as you’ll very likely become infected while even browsing for software.
As far as virus protection software, most all of them are good as long as they are constantly updating their software to keep up with new viruses. Thousands of new viruses are created every day.
By keeping good backups of data, and being very proactive of what I’m doing with my computer, I’ve enjoyed a virus free existence over the last five years.
Use a little common sense, and I’m sure you’ll be able to avoid computer virus infection as well. Good luck, and happy surfing.
