Everywhere I look…. Computer Viruses

It seems these days that viruses are everywhere and infecting more people than normal. In the past month, I’ve seen more infections from viruses than I’ve seen in years.
The problem is even the best anti-virus software can’t always protect you. It’s best to be proactive, and know what to lookout for on your own. Here are some hints to help you avoid virus infection.
First off, be very, very careful with your emails. If you send me a file, and I wasn’t expecting that file, or didn’t ask for it. I won’t be opening it. You can easily send your friends or family a virus without even being aware it.
Secondly, you’ll have to take note of which websites you are visiting. By visiting non reputable websites, you have to be very careful. Some nefarious hackers have installed very innocent looking scripts on websites whose sole purpose is to infect your computer.
Third, use a web browser other than Microsoft Internet Explorer. I highly recommend Mozilla Firefox. It’s a great program that is very customizable and is a lot less likely to cause infection. Because more people use Internet Explorer, most hackers like to go after those users rather than the less popular Firefox.
Fourth, don’t download illegal software. Many so called “warez” sites are very aggressive in promoting virus infections. You have to be very careful as you’ll very likely become infected while even browsing for software.
As far as virus protection software, most all of them are good as long as they are constantly updating their software to keep up with new viruses. Thousands of new viruses are created every day.
By keeping good backups of data, and being very proactive of what I’m doing with my computer, I’ve enjoyed a virus free existence over the last five years.
Use a little common sense, and I’m sure you’ll be able to avoid computer virus infection as well. Good luck, and happy surfing.

This is touted across the internet as the best free antivirus software on the Internet. It scans exceptionally well and will run even while you are working with other applications. Download.com gives this free program a 5 star rating.
The positives of AntiVir 8 are its manual scanning features that let you scan individual files and folders by right clicking on them or dragging and dropping them into the application window. It is configured to run in safe mode – a very convenient feature! You can choose to have full reports on every problem issue or receive just the basic information concerning viruses. It updates automatically, runs on a schedule and has various options for scanning tasks.
People do complain that it is very slow when downloading definition updates and does not detect a majority of the spyware that may be on your machine and the spyware it detects requires you to buy the software for removal.
Version 4.8 of Avast! Antivirus
With a good CNET rating and great Download.com rating, this software offers protection against viruses, spyware and adware. While its rates of spyware detection are not all that great (finds 1/3 of spyware), it does include removal of spyware in addition to virus removal.
Avast Antivirus v4.8 is always free without restrictions. Forums and blogs discuss it with good reviews because of its great detecting and removing abilities as well as its fast connection and downloading of updates.
The worst things said about Avast concern the need to register if you wish to use it beyond 60 days and keep registering every year after that. When you realize that paid programs are virtually the same only you have to pay for your subscription, this negative doesn’t seem too inconvenient.
Antivirus programs are a necessity for every computer that is connected to the internet. If you find the high cost of popular antivirus programs too much for your budget, AntiVir Personal Edition Classic 8 and Avast! Antivirus v4.8 are satisfactory alternatives. Cost should not be a factor when it comes to protecting your files from harm. To be sure you are getting the real versions, visit their home sites to download them. There are fraud sites online that will try to either sell them to you, or download spyware and viruses in place of the real free versions of these programs.
