What You Always Wanted to Know About Operating Systems

Operating systems like Windows, Unix or Mac OS X are widely used and known but many users can’t explain what an operating system actually does. Put simply, an operating system is the core software part that brings the computer hardware and software together.

The kind of operating system a computer uses is dependent on what kind of computer it is and what it’s going to be used for. Most computers come preloaded with the operating system when you purchase them. Personal computers usually come preloaded with Windows and Apple computers are normally preloaded with the Macintosh operating system and servers use such operating systems as Linux and UNIX however, there are hundreds of operating systems available if you want to use a different one.

Operating systems are in all kinds of products that we use, not just computers. Operating systems are used by video game consoles, cell phones, PDA’s and more.

Software and hardware are managed by the operating system which controls all their functions and features. It manages the communication between applications and the computer hardware. It also makes sure that software and hardware will not run into conflicts while running on a computer system.

So called drivers are used so that the operating system can interact and work with the computer’s hardware such as the video card or computer memory.

The operating system provides the software programs with hardware information which means the applications don’t have to add their own routines to work with the hardware. The operating system manages all hardware of a computer system.

The operating system is the core component. It recognizes input from computer hardware or software and sends the requests to software or hardware that’s running or connected to the computer. It’s basically moving data from one piece to another on the computer. Moving the computer mouse sends the information about the speed and direction to the operating system which transfers the information to the video card which outputs the result on the computer monitor.

Security is another part of any operating system. They usually making use of so called computer profiles which are associated with one user or a user group. Authorization can take place locally but also over a computer network or the Internet. Users and user groups can have different authorization levels enabling or permitting them from using certain functions and features of the operating system.

Martin reports regularly about the soon to be released Microsoft system Windows 7.
